Airel Farley:
When Airel
Farley was ten years old she received some sage advice from her
father. He told her that luck is when PREPARATION MEETS
OPPORTUNITY. Since then she feels opportunity is waiting just
around the corner and she must be prepared so she can take full
advantage of it. It seems Airel has prepared herself well and
set her goals appropriately so that when opportunity presented
itself, luck was the only thing that could come of it.
Airel has taken courses at Glide High
school that prepare her for becoming a neurologist: biology,
anatomy/physiology, chemistry, calculus, and advanced math. She
excelled in these courses, and in fact ALL of her courses. Airel
holds a 4.0 GPA and ranks first in her senior class. She has
completed dual college credits at UCC. She has read literature
and listened to speeches through the TED program pertaining to
the brain and its development.
Airel's home is a certified therapeutic foster facility for
children to have severe trauma or other mental issues. It's easy
to see from where she gets her inspiration.
There was some confusion for me on Airel's application. She
stated she wanted to major in music but in her personal
statement she was all about a career in neurology. I talked to
her to clear this up and she said she wants to use music as a
therapy for communicating to the people who have brain trauma or
injury. I will check back with her next year and give you an
update on how she is doing.
Airel is fully aware of the long years ahead studying in the
field of neurology. She plans to acquire her PhD in this field
as she says: unlocking the secrets and intricacies of the brain.
She is planning to attend Pacific University in Forest Grove,
Oregon. That is, of course unless the opportunity consolidates
for her to study for a year in Germany. She will learn later
this month if the cultural immersion program accepts her and
sends her to Europe. No, she does not speak a word of German.
She looks forward to learning the language as well as studying
neurology and music.
Music is a very important part of Airel's life, as
demonstrated by her performance tonight. She also plays flute
and sings alto in the school choir.
She has been in private singing lessons for some time.
She organized and ran the high school blood drive, donating
18 hours of her time. She worked sorting and packaging food for
the canned food drive. And she made pillowcases for cancer last
year.
Airel tutored fellow freshmen and assisted them with
homework.
She is involved at Calvary Chapel in youth group and bible
camp. For three years she gave 48 hours of her time each year in
camp maintenance at Fir Point bible camp.
Airel is senior class secretary and served grades 9-11 as
class representative. She played softball grades 9-11 and soccer
all 4 years and is presently captain of the team.
Airel, on behalf of the Glide Community Scholarship
committee, I present to you a scholarship of $3,300 towards your
college education. Auf Wedersehn!
Justin Farley:
I am very pleased to present this
scholarship to Justin Farley. He has proved to be an excellent
scholar and has been on the Honor Roll every year, and has a
3.74 GPA while taking advanced classes.
He has been involved with high school sports to include
football (varsity fullback), soccer (Captain two years), and the
varsity wrestling team. He plays drums in the band, and is a
member of the National Honor Society.
In addition to his school activity, he has found time to
volunteer and help the community. Justin has volunteered at the
Glide Fire Station the last four years, and he has passed his
"Emergency Medical Responder" certification. He also holds a
healthcare provider CPR card.
He is active in his church teaching Vacation Bible School. He
plays drums for the worship team and helps in the nursery. He
also helps with blood drives, the school auctions and canned
food drives. Since this doesn’t keep him busy, he has a major
role in the current production of "A Few Good Men" at the UACT
theater in Roseburg.
Justin plans on going to UCC to get his degree in Fire
Science in order to become a structure firefighter. He would
like to work in the Roseburg area so that he can continue to
volunteer at the Glide Fire Station.
I am going to quote the Dean of Students at Glide High
School: "Not only does Justin have good work habits, he also has
a sense of humor that is used very tactfully. His communication
skills are highly polished, allowing him to relate to those of
his own age as well as to adults. Justin has always been
responsible, enthusiastic, competent, and of high moral
principles."
Justin is unable to be her since he is performing at the UACT
Theater tonight. His sister Airel will accept his certificate.
Ian Quimby:
Winston Churchill once said: " We make
a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give."
This is Ian Quimby's quote to open his community service
statement. His Principal said of him: "his personal character,
work ethic and involvement in our community are just a few of
the attributes that make Ian rise to the top amongst his peers."
His counselor said "if there is something going on at Glide High
School, he is there and involved in some way."
Ian Quimby has made wildland firefighting a goal for his
career. He is a part of the explorer program with the Glide
Rural Fire Department. Ian plans to work for Oregon Department
of Forestry or The US Forest Service. He applied to Oregon State
University, University of Portland and Southern Oregon
University and was accepted to all three schools. He has decided
on Oregon State University in Corvallis.
Ian is president of his senior class and has held student
body offices all 4 years at Glide High: president in 9th
grade, vice president in 10th and 11th
grade and now president again. As captain of the football team,
he has led his team to 2nd team all-league O-line. He
is captain of track and field and earned varsity letter grades
10 and 11. He wrestled 9th and 11th grade
and placed 2nd at State in 9th grade.
Ian has an agriculture background as well. He has worked for
his family business 4-Q timber and livestock as a logger/rancher
as many as 70 hours per week. He has course credits in
agricultural mechanics and won prizes at the county fair. He has
been involved in FFA all 4 high school years and served as vice
president grade 10 and president grades 11 and 12.
Ian's scholastic record is excellent even though he spends
time in sports and outside activities. He ranks 3rd
in his class of 47 with a 3.89 GPA. And is treasure of the
National Honor Society. He has also earned dual college credits
through UCC.
He has been involved in choir, drama club and has earned the
rank of Eagle Scout in Boy Scouts, completing his project of
building a fence around the garden at the elementary school. For
the last 3 years he has worked at fun nights with Glide
Elementary school and taken students to town to get new clothes
with dress a child. He has read to elementary students in
literature week.
Ian has volunteered his free time in helping hands holiday
food boxes, at the community club parties, and with Red Cross
blood drives.
Additionally Ian has an interest in the performing arts. In
the back of his mind he has a notion to be an actor. He has been
in at least one play each year of high school. If he could drop
into Hollywood and get into acting in the movies, that would
make him happy. But his drive to get an education and a job to
live a successful life keeps him on track for now.
This summer Ian plans to visit a foreign exchange student in
Merida Mexico. He does not speak Spanish yet, but after a summer
visit in Mexico be assured he will know enough to get by.
Ian, on behalf of the Glide Community Scholarship Committee,
I would like to present this scholarship of $3300 for your
college education. Via con Dios!
