The Glide Community Club continues to be a center for community life in the North Umpqua region.   Since 2004, the club's membership and revenue have grown tremendously.  As a result, major renovations to the Community Center have been bold and dramatic.

The building was old in 1958 when it was purchased from  Glide School District.

By the twenty-first century, the roof was leaking, causing a variety of problems on the inside.  In addition, systems and furnishings had begun to wear out or fail -- things like plumbing, heating, floors, and kitchen appliances.     The most serious concern became the rotting support beams beneath the building.

Members began fundraising, and the ambitious board began pursuing grant funding.  The first grant started a whole series of repairs.  The list of upgrades over the last few years is impressive and ongoing.

             New kitchen appliances.
                    New roof.
                           New exterior paint.
                                  New windows and window coverings.
                                         New hardwood floor.
New stage and upgraded sound system.
                                                     New kitchen flooring.
                                                           New landscaping.
                                                                New girders.
                                                                     New heat pump
                                                                         New....   (to be continued)

Some of the changes, though vitally important, are not quite as glamorous.  The plumbing works better than ever.   Bathroom exhaust fans no longer drown out the speaker at events.  The heater is running more efficiently.  The door locks actually lock and unlock.  Boxes and corners of "stuff" have been sorted through and disposed of, recovering much needed storage space.  Additional dishes have been obtained, enabling the club to feed even more people at potluck suppers.

Some of the beautification projects have been done with free labor.  Roofing and painting labor were free thanks to the generosity and hard work of the Wolf Creek Job Corps.  They are members of our community also, and have not only contributed construction labor, but also helped with events such as the children's Christmas party and the Glide First Citizen.  Other improvements have been entirely free.  Two stunning  "North Umpqua" murals were painted by a group of community artists and donated to the club.  Landscaping plants, materials, and labor were donated.  Flooring for the upstairs meeting room and the labor to install it were gifts of club members. The First Citizen plaque hanging on the wall was also made by club members. Even this web page is a donation from members.

Finally the biggest, most complicated, and by far most expensive job was tackled.  In the Fall of 2010, the GCC was lifted from its foundation.  For years the rainwater runoff from the North Umpqua Highway was channeled right under the club.  Numerous efforts have all failed to stop this water problem.   As a result of the constant standing water, some of the piers under the building had settled, leaving beams suspended in mid-air.  In other places rot had started eroding the integrity of the beams, particularly near the corners of the building.    As part of the renovation, a new French drain was installed in an attempt to keep the water out for good.  A new cinderblock foundation wall was added.

The project was quite impressive.  Many community members came by to watch.  The News Review even did a piece on this project.

Here you can see the rotted end on a beam.      And the new drain.               And the club suspended in mid-air,

Revitalization of the building has been accompanied by revitalization in the activities and services of the club.

Old programs were revitalized and started anew.  Weekly Bingo was restarted by hardworking, enthusiastic club members.  A happy group of gamers is at the center every week having fun together while they help fund upgrades.

The Glide First Citizen celebration has also resumed thanks to  dedicated club members.  Once again the Glide community annually honors some of its outstanding civic-minded residents.

Scholarships for graduating Glide High School students are again being awarded, thanks to donations from generous club members and the hard work of club fundraisers.

Building rentals have grown since the remodels have begun, bringing in much needed income.  A more attractive building provides a memorable setting for weddings, anniversaries, and other parties.

the kitchen gets new countertops!                         New countertops in the bathroom too.

The addition of the new heat pump system will also enhance building rentals.  Imagine it being cool during the heat of the summer.

The Club continues to offer the people of the North Umpqua region fun and educational activities at the Center.  Children's parties are especially popular: Easter egg hunts, pumpkin carving, Christmas ornament making and tree decorating. The Center is a location for community classes given by UCC and the county Master Preservers.  Graffiti Weekend has come to Glide in part through sponsorship of the Club.

Our sponsored Boy Scout troop continues to meet here weekly.  The Club provides financial and logistical support for the troop's annual Holiday Food and Gift Basket program, the biggest in Douglas County.

Potluck suppers, spaghetti feeds, craft fairs, forest fire updates, candidates' forums, immunization clinics, blood drives, the Glide Wildflower Show, and a free Christmas dinner are some more of the many activities bringing the community together throughout the year.

As the Glide Community Club begins its second 50 years, it continues to be an organization that encourages people to come together to work, play, help one another, and serve the entire community.
