Thomas DeBell
Thomas DeBell plans to attend Oregon State University in
Corvallis, majoring in Chemical engineering. His planned
occupation is Sustainable resources engineer.
Thomas is able to maintain a 3.92 GPA while being School
Treasurer, Captain of his track team, Playing tuba and sax, and
Singing.
He is a member of National Honors Society and
founder/president of outdoor and literary clubs. He also founded
a men's A Cappella group called "Sudden Impact."
And if that is not enough, he has contributed over 450 hours
of volunteer service over the past 4 years, including Coaching,
Tutoring, Singing, and Red Cross drives.
Tom plans to join Engineers Without Borders using education
and skills he develops in college to help others. I've heard of
Doctors Without Borders and know of the wonderful work they do,
but I was not aware of Engineers w/o borders, so I looked it up
online. They are funded by large corporations and do great work
both domestic and internationally in water, sanitation, civil
engineering, agriculture and other areas. Tom will be able to
join at no cost as a student. We wish you all the Luck!

Second Scholarship Presenter: Nancy Tague
Carson Trimble
Just about every week
of the school year, there’s an after-hours event happening at
the elementary school, and little kids being little kids, help
is needed to run it.
Just about every week, throughout all 4 of her high school
years, Carson Trimble has shown up to help out.
Movie nights,
carnivals, Celebration of Literacy... you name it, Carson is
there.
She says she participates because she loves to see the kids’
smiles.
She must really like kids, because 2 Sundays a month at
Calvary Chapel she teaches Sunday school to kids preschool
through third grade. Most Sundays you can also find her singing
at the church.
Around Glide High School, she’s just as busy. She’s been a
class officer twice. She sings alto in the choir, belongs
to the geology, science, and outdoor clubs and the National
Honor Society, where she’s logged over 100 hours of service.
She plays softball, has coached softball for Glide Summer Rec,
and keeps statistics during wrestling matches.
She registers donors at blood drives, participates in school
cleanups, boxes food for the Boy Scout Christmas program.
Carson has also logged 180 hours as a volunteer at Mercy
Medical Center, helping to admit patients and get them to their
rooms.
Altogether she’s logged over 1000 hours of service to school,
church, and community. Somehow she still finds time to
work over 10 hours a week at 3 different jobs.
And she does all this while maintaining a near-perfect GPA of
3.98, taking a heavy course load full of science and math.
Love for the outdoors is in Carson’s family heritage. She has
considered a career managing timberland and timber operations
for the Forest Service or a private timber owner. But her
real dream is using the new technology of biomass production–
generating energy from timber by-products -- to restart the
Glide mill and revive this community.
As a first step toward that dream, Carson is headed for OSU
to major in Natural Resources. The Glide Community Club is
glad to be able to help her work towards her dreams, by awarding
her one of our 2014 scholarships.
Carson, we wish you much success as you reach to the future.

Third Scholarship Presenter: Christy Scheufele
Elle Rappé
If you’ve been to FFA or band auctions, you might have
noticed Elle Rappé serving. At breakfasts before wrestling
meets, you’d see her cooking. During basketball games, she was
working the concession stands for the Booster Club. At track
meets, she’s the start clerk, getting the athletes lined up for
each heat. At the wildflower show, you might have encountered
her at the door, greeting visitors. During the children’s
Halloween and Christmas parties held in this building, she helps
run the games. When the Red Cross holds blood drives at the high
school, she’s registering donors and sitting beside the beds
encouraging them. And she takes her turn donating too! She’s
helped elementary kids learn to play basketball and kept stats
for their middle school games, taken kids shopping on
Dress-A-Child day, read to them during the Celebration of
Literacy.
If there’s something happening in Glide, chances are very
good Elle will be there helping out. In fact, it’s very unusual
that she is sitting at a table here tonight, because for the
last 3 years she’s been one of the young people filling your
glasses and taking your dirty plates. Her counselor says she is
one of the first to volunteer her time whenever a need arises.
She’s a committed member of this community, not just the high
school but all of Glide, quietly giving back day after day, week
after week, year after year, to the community that raised her.
And while doing all that, she’s also been an outstanding
student. She ranks first in her class with a perfect 4.0
average, taking the most challenging courses the high school
offers. All 4 years she has played saxophone in the band and
competed in volleyball, track and basketball, receiving awards
and going to state championships, this year serving as team
captain for volleyball and co-captain for track. She’s been
active in school leadership all 4 years, serving as class or
student body officer. This year she’s also president of the
National Honor Society, not just participating in their service
projects but leading them as well.
Elle has been accepted at OSU where she plans to study
psychology. She has noticed that friends turn to her for help
with personal obstacles. Her goals include earning a masters
degree and becoming a counselor, family therapist, or sports
psychologist. We have no doubt that she will accomplish whatever
goals she sets for herself, and we’re pleased to be able to help
her get started. Elle, we thank you for being such an active
member of our community and wish you the greatest success in
college and beyond.
