About the GCC

The Glide Community Club is a long-standing organization that has become, over a period of  over fifty years, a fixture of the North Umpqua Valley. It is central to the community, both in terms of its location on Highway 138 and its role in supporting a wide range of functions and constituencies. The club is located in an historic building, formerly the Glide High School gymnasium. The building was moved to its current site along the North Umpqua Highway in 1958. Lying at the eastern edge of the “100 Valleys of the Umpqua,“ Glide is a scenic town with a full range of local services within walking distance of the club. Local attractions include the Glide Ranger Station and Colliding Rivers Visitors Center. The Rock Creek Hatchery is a short drive up the Wild and Scenic North Umpqua River. The grounds of the club include a Blue Star Memorial. A unique tribute echoing the Wall in the U.S. Capital Mall, it lists the names of North Umpqua military veterans of the 20th century.

Glide Community Club has an active membership of over 200. The facilities are used by a number of organizations including: Douglas County Senior Services, National Forest Service, Glide Wildflower Show, Glide Volunteer Fire Department, Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts. Ongoing activities include: bingo, a farmers’ market, youth activities, fundraisers, yard sales, weddings, 4th of July celebrations, free martial arts classes, card parties. We host the annual Glide Wildflower Show and the Glide First Citizens Celebration. GCC functions as a Senior Center, offering health care screening and other services and workshops. Our diverse membership includes people with a wide range of valuable experience. These volunteers are available to offer classes on a range of topics to include gardening, cooking, canning, quilting, first aid and emergency preparedness seminars. Wolf Creek Job Corp has provided assistance in construction projects and maintenance of the building. The GCC facilities are available to any organization willing to comply with our rental agreement.

The GCC  Board of Directors meets once a month. These meetings are well-attended, as are the bi-monthly membership meetings. Several members of the board have been GCC members since the 1970’s. Club members provide volunteer labor for cleaning, maintenance, landscaping and other chores and projects around the building. GCC has a well-maintained website providing current information on club activities and reports.

GCC reaches out to the local youth and invites them to participate in club activities, to attend board meetings. Every year we award a college scholarships to a Glide High School student. Other youth activities include dances and talent shows. We have recently partnered with our senior citizens to purchased a large-screen TV for club use.

The club building is structurally sound, and has recently undergone major renovation. In 2007 we replaced the old roof with quality metal roofing. In 2008 we installed a new hardwood floor. In 2009 we rebuilt the old stage inside the building, and had new windows and shades installed all around. Over the past several years the kitchen has been upgraded with a new dishwasher, stoves and refrigerator. Shamrock Gardens of Glide provided the design, materials and construction of new landscaping around the building, to include an irrigation system and a variety of flowers and shrubs. The outside of the building was painted by members of the Wolf Creek Job Corps. The overall improvement in the appearance of the building, inside and out, is remarkable. The Glide Community Club takes great pride in these projects, and we are thankful to the organizations that have contributed to our successes.

GCC is a solid organization with excellent leadership and great potential. We are a sustainable organization, with a proven record of community support and viability. The GCC is always looking for ways to continue its important role in the community, and expand its horizons in order to better serve all the people of the North Umpqua Valley.
